What more can you say about the Lakeland 12U Lady Chiefs?
Once again, they found themselves in familiar territory—playing for another local tournament championship.
At this point, maybe we should not have expected anything less.
Just two weeks after capturing the Dunmore Softball All-Star Tournament championship on July 20, the Lady Chiefs were back under the bright lights, playing for another title at Tripp Park.
There must be something in the water—or maybe it’s all that farmland around Chapman Lake—because this group has developed into one of the premier youth softball teams in the Lackawanna League.
During this tournament alone, Lakeland knocked off talented programs like Abington Heights, 6-2, and Mid Valley, 8-0. Those aren’t just ordinary youth softball teams. Those communities have consistently produced some of District 2’s strongest varsity softball programs—and even some of the best teams in Pennsylvania.
Yet Lakeland never seemed intimidated by the names stitched across the front of the opposing jerseys.
The Lady Chiefs simply showed up, competed and handled their business.
As a Lakeland Class of 2002 graduate, I’ll admit something. For much of the last two decades, I didn’t follow Lakeland softball as closely as I should have. Looking back through the records, the program often found itself battling to stay above .500 while trying to keep pace with some of the area’s perennial powers.
But this team feels different.
This isn’t just a talented softball team.
It’s a connected softball team.
You can see it from the first pitch until the final out.
Players erupt from the dugout after a big hit. They pick each other up after mistakes instead of hanging their heads. They play with confidence instead of fear. Their defense has been outstanding, their pitching has controlled games, and whenever Lakeland has needed a clutch hit, someone has answered the call—whether it has been Leah, Katie, Elena, Coral, Skylar, Avery, Layla, Lylah, Auden or another teammate.
That’s what separates this group.
They don’t rely on one superstar.
On any given day, someone different becomes the hero.
One player delivers the key hit. Another makes the diving stop. Another throws a shutdown inning. That’s championship softball.
Yes, Lakeland lost to Mid Valley earlier in the tournament.
But something told me those two teams weren’t finished with each other.
Championship teams rarely let one loss define them.
When the rematch finally arrived, Lakeland responded exactly the way great teams do. The Lady Chiefs returned to the field, played outstanding defense, attacked at the plate and completely shut down a talented Mid Valley squad in an impressive 8-0 victory.
No excuses.
No panic.
Just a team that believed in itself.
That’s become the identity of these Lady Chiefs.
They bend.
They rarely break.
When adversity hits, they don’t point fingers. They don’t lose confidence. They simply regroup and keep competing. Outside of only a few innings during their two tournament defeats, Lakeland answered nearly every challenge thrown its way this summer.
A huge reason for that success has been the dominant pitching tandem of Katie S. and Elena F.
Against Mid Valley, the two combined to allow just one hit while completely controlling the game. They attacked the strike zone, trusted their defense and never allowed Mid Valley’s offense to gain momentum.
That performance set the stage for the championship against the Moosic Redwings.
Even with the Redwings missing a few key players, Lakeland still faced a difficult task. To win the tournament, the Lady Chiefs would have to beat Moosic twice.
That’s never easy.
Still, I believed they could do it.
This wasn’t an average Lakeland softball team.
This was a championship-caliber group built on outstanding pitching, dependable defense, timely hitting and an unwavering belief in one another.
The Lady Chiefs had already proven they belonged with the best teams in the area.
Now, they had an opportunity to finish the job.
Game 1: Lakeland Leaves No Doubt
Lakeland wasted little time taking control of the championship opener.
The Lady Chiefs exploded for five runs in the first inning before adding five more in the second to build a commanding 10-2 lead. Aggressive baserunning, patient at-bats and timely hitting immediately put the Redwings on their heels, and Lakeland never let up.
The offense continued rolling, adding another run in the fourth before putting the finishing touches on an emphatic 15-3 victory with four more runs in the fifth. Lakeland pounded out 14 hits, with Katie S. driving in four runs. Elena F., Leah M. and Coral S. each collected multiple hits, while Avery R. delivered three RBIs. Nearly every player in the lineup contributed, showcasing the depth that has made this team so dangerous all summer.
Inside the circle, Katie S. struck out six over three strong innings before Elena F. finished things off with a scoreless final frame. Lakeland’s defense backed them up all afternoon, limiting the Redwings to just four hits while playing fundamentally sound softball.
The convincing victory moved the Lady Chiefs one win away from capturing their second local tournament championship in just over two weeks.
Game 2: A Championship Worthy of the Moment
But championship softball has a way of testing every team one final time.
Game 2 was an entirely different battle.
The Moosic Redwings responded like champions themselves, playing the same disciplined, determined brand of softball that had carried them throughout the tournament. Every inning felt bigger than the last as momentum swung back and forth between two outstanding teams that refused to give an inch.
Lakeland once again showed tremendous resilience. The Lady Chiefs collected 11 hits, battled back to regain the lead and appeared poised to force a decisive winner-take-all game.
Instead, the Redwings had one final answer.
With the score tied 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Sophia M. lined a walk-off RBI single to center field, touching off a championship celebration as Moosic claimed an 8-7 victory and the Tripp Park Tournament title.
For Lakeland, it was a heartbreaking ending.
But it should not overshadow what this team accomplished.
The Lady Chiefs reached another championship game, won another tournament title earlier this summer, defeated several of the area’s best teams, and established themselves as one of the premier 12U softball teams in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Championship trophies eventually collect dust.
The memories, the friendships and the culture this group has built will last much longer.
If this summer proved anything, it’s that the future of Lakeland softball is incredibly bright.
And something tells me this won’t be the last time we see these Lady Chiefs playing for a championship.
