SCRANTON PA- —- The West Scranton Lady Invaders are no longer just chasing wins — they are chasing history, legacy, and the chance to bring another District 2 championship back home to the blue, white, and purple. It has been a few years since West Scranton last stood on top of the district mountain during its 2021 championship run, but this year’s group has carried itself like a team determined to carve out its own chapter in program history. Long before this playoff push, the signs were already there. Early in the season, the Lady Invaders rolled past Hazleton Area 13-3 and later pushed defending PIAA Class 4A state champion Valley View to the edge in a dramatic 6-5 battle. On that chilly April afternoon at Valley View, West Scranton had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, just one swing away from shaking up the softball landscape across District 2. Earlier that same day, I remember texting a friend whose daughter plays for the Lady Cougars and saying, “Valley View should win today, but West Scranton can be a tough team. Don’t be shocked if they hang around.” A few hours later, the Lady Invaders proved exactly who they were becoming.

This is not a team that stumbled into a championship opportunity by accident. West Scranton has been sharpened by pressure, tested by tough opponents, and hardened through close games all season long. They have hitters capable of flipping momentum with one inning, pitchers willing to battle through adversity, and a dugout that refuses to let the energy die. Playoff softball is rarely about perfection. It is about toughness, resilience, and surviving the emotional chaos long enough to land the final punch. Now, standing one win away from a district title, the Lady Invaders can almost feel the weight of the moment growing heavier. Championship games carry a different heartbeat. Every pitch feels louder. Every baserunner matters more. Every defensive play echoes a little longer. And now West Scranton has a chance to write its next chapter — not with promises or predictions, but with dirt-stained uniforms, dugout energy, and a team fighting for the name across the front of its jerseys.

Game over.

Under the warm daytime skies, with the sun shining down and a district championship atmosphere building inning by inning, the Lady Invaders looked loose, confident, and dangerous in a commanding 10-4 victory over Hazleton Area. After three quiet innings, West Scranton’s offense suddenly exploded to life with a four-run fourth inning before delivering the knockout punch with six more runs in the sixth. Every inning after that felt louder. Every hit felt heavier. The dugout energy grew stronger with every run crossing the plate. Deluca sparked the offense with a huge 3-for-4 performance while scoring two runs and driving in another, and Williams stayed scorching hot at the plate with three hits and an RBI.

My approach today was to keep my hands back and drive.I felt very locked in because going into this game i knew what i was going to be seeing at the plate so i was ready for anything.” Said West Scrantons Sydney Williams

She added: We all everyone has each others backs and if someone in the infield misses the ball we know we have the outfielders behind to stop the ball.We all also have a lot of confidence in each to make the routine plays and even the outstanding plays.”

Brudnicki added two hits and an RBI, while Tallo delivered one of the biggest swings of the afternoon with a momentum-shifting three-run double that completely cracked the game open. Stanko added two RBIs of her own as the Lady Invaders piled up 13 hits and overwhelmed Hazleton with relentless pressure, confidence, and dugout energy that kept growing stronger every inning.

Today at the plate I was really looking for my pitch, not trying to chase and just pass the bat along. It was super important for the team to stay aggressive at the plate because you can’t win a game with no base runners or hits. Putting the ball in play is so important. “ Said West Scrantons Sophia DeLuca

Sophia continues:We are a really strong team and are always willing to put up a good fight whether we’re up or down. Regardless we realized that we needed some cushion runs and really turned it up. We are all super proud of each other because we are showing everyone else what kind of team we truly are.”

Inside the circle, Connor battled through six strong innings while the defense behind her continued making timely plays whenever pressure started building. Hazleton collected six hits in the loss, led by Klesh, who finished 2-for-4 with a home run, while Sachs added two hits and Matyas drove in two runs. Even when Hazleton tried to claw back into the game, West Scranton answered every challenge with another big inning, another clutch hit, and another wave of belief flowing from the dugout. By the final out, the Lady Invaders looked exactly like the type of team nobody wants to face this time of year — loose, dangerous, confident, and catching fire at exactly the right moment.

Honestly, I just went out there with full confidence in myself and my teammates. Coming into the game, I knew Hazleton had a good lineup, so I had to step up for my team and do my job. My teammates had my back no matter what, and the strikeouts just came along with it. What was working best for me today was my curve and just attacking the zone. Today’s game was truly a group effort, and I couldn’t be more proud of everyone.” Said West Scrantons Kaleiah Connor’s

She added:Today’s game was a huge group effort. I’m so proud of my teammates, and they really showed up today. Obviously, we were down 2-0, but I never let myself or my teammates get down. We kept our confidence up and our dugout alive because we knew we could come back from anything. After Hazleton scored two runs, we knew we just had to barrel up and put the ball in play, and that’s what we did. It honestly gives me so much confidence as a pitcher knowing that my teammates will have my back no matter how many runs I give up. I’m so lucky to have such a good group of girls behind me that I get to call my teammates.”

The Lady Invaders have spent this entire season proving they belong among the top teams in District 2 softball. They have walked into hostile environments, battled defending champions, survived pressure-filled innings, and continued answering every challenge thrown in front of them. Now, with a district championship opportunity waiting ahead, this group carries more than gloves and bats onto the field. They carry the pride of West Scranton softball, the memories of the teams that came before them, and the belief that something unforgettable is still waiting to be written.

Hazleton’s, Almeida had us a little off balance early, making some great pitches. But our girls are gritty, and made the right adjustments. “ Said West Scrantons Head Coach, John Connor

He added: Kaleiah is a pit bull, and doesn’t get rattled. The other girls know she is going to give us a punchers chance in any game and they rally behind that.”

He continued:We battled a few injuries this year and have girls ready to step up and fill in is critical to any team. It helps to have a great dugout with every kid keeping the energy up. I’m super proud of these girls and in the fight they have in them.

District championship games are where legacies begin. The lights feel brighter. The pressure feels heavier. The crowd sounds louder. Every inning carries the weight of an entire season. Somewhere in that chaos — with dirt flying, emotions rising, and adrenaline racing through every pitch — the Lady Invaders now have a chance to leave their own fingerprints on West Scranton history. And if this season has shown anything, it is this: when the moment gets bigger, West Scranton does not back down from it.

They rise with it.
